Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your New Eyewear
- Start wearing your new glasses immediately
- Wear your new glasses continuously unless prescribed for special use only
- Wear your glasses as close to your face as possible – poor fit can change the prescription
- Clean them regularly with proper solutions and cloths to keep the surface free of debris and smudges
- Progressive Lens Wearers: Point your nose at reading material and adjust your chin to bring reading materials into sharpest focus
When you buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, you often give up all of these benefits and can even make things worse. For example, if your sunglasses offer no UV protection, you increase your exposure to UV rays. Cheap sunglasses block some of the light, causing your iris to open and make the pupil opening larger to allow more light in. This lets in more UV rays as well, increasing the damage UV rays can cause to the retina.
My Eyecare Practice offers you high-end designer sunglasses by Juicy Coutoure, Nike, Tura, Puma and Lulu Guinness, among others. Why is it important to take good care of your eyes with high quality sunglasses? There are several reasons, but some of the most important are:
- Sunglasses should provide protection from ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the cornea and the retina. Good sunglasses can eliminate most harmful UV rays.
- Sunglasses must provide protection from intense light. When the eye receives too much light, it naturally constricts the iris and makes the pupil opening smaller to restrict the amount of light that enters your eye. Once it has constricted the iris as far as it can, the next step is squinting. If there is still too much light, as there can be when sunlight is reflecting off of snow, the result is damage to the retina. Good sunglasses can block light entering the eyes by as much as 97 percent to avoid damage.
- Sunglasses provide protection from glare. Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light, and the bright spots can be distracting or can hide objects. Good sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization.
New advances in contact lens technology allow most people to successfully wear contact lenses-even those with astigmatism or bifocal requirements. You’ll quickly recognize that we go beyond the “one size fits all” approach to contact lenses and we understand the importance of personal attention when it comes to your vision and comfort. A routine exam won’t provide some of the measurements and testing that are required to determine if your eyes are suitable for contact lens wear and to generate your contact lens Rx. We carefully examine the structures of your eye as well as your history of conditions such as dry eye and allergies. We also have instrumentation to show us the shape and curvature of your corneas to insure that we determine the best fit of your contact lenses. Not all lenses fit everyone the same way, and a poor fit can cause problems with comfort, vision, and eye health. Part of our job is to help your future vision, not just your present vision. We want your eyes to be healthy for many years to come. Our doctors will thoroughly evaluate your visual needs, prescription, and long term eye health to determine which brand and type of contact lens combines for you the most convenient, comfortable, and healthy contact lenses available.
Hybrid contact lenses combine the visual clarity and therapeutic aspects of Gas Perm lenses with the comfort of Soft Lenses.
Silicone Hydrogel Lenses
Another category of lenses that are fairly new to the market are the silicone hydrogel lenses. These lenses can provide many times more oxygen to the eyes compared to other category of lenses. These lenses are actually providing some patients with a second chance to remain in soft contact lenses. If there is a significant risk of failing ocular health due to lack of oxygen to the cornea, then these lenses may provide the needed oxygen and therefore may extend a patient’s ability to remain in soft lenses.
Bifocal & Multifocal Contact Lenses
Just as the name indicates, bifocal lenses are divided into two distinct segments for different vision powers, the first for distance vision and the second for near vision. This enables you to clearly switch your focus from near to far as needed, but your vision will not necessarily be clear in between. The term multifocal lenses can refer to any lenses with multiple powers including bifocals, trifocals or progressive lenses. Non-bifocal multifocal lenses have a range of powers that enable you to constantly adjust your focus to see clearly from up close to far and in between.
For those patients that have had a difficult time finding lenses that provide good enough vision for their lifestyle, there are RGP or “hard” contacts. These lenses do provide better vision in most cases, but are usually a bit more diffcult to adjust to comfort wise. There are many patients in these lenses that are completely happy and unwilling to switch to soft contact lenses.
Corneal Refractive Thearapy (CRT)
Corneal Reshaping with CRT Contact Lenses can be an ideal vision correction method for active children, especially those involved in sports, or children who are genetically prone to having their nearsightedness progress year after year. The principle is similar to the use of a dental retainer used by an orthodontist to realign crooked teeth. The vision retainers are similar to contact lenses and are only worn at night while sleeping. They are then removed upon awakening to provide clear vision without using glasses or contact lenses! The retainers are comfortable and very easy to care for. CRT does not work on everyone and needs to be performed in a very exact and meticulous manner.
New Lens Technology
ASK ABOUT SPECIALTY LENSES FOR YOUR NEW FRAMES.
Designer frames may help you look good, but the lenses are what allow you to see well. There are many options to make your lenses lighter weight, non-glare, bifocals without any lines, computer-use designs, transitions that offer sun protection when activated, and different material options that have crisper, clearer optics to give you not only the most optimal vision, but also the most cosmetically-pleasing eyewear available anywhere!
Our philosophy when prescribing glasses is to educate you on the differences in design and quality of lenses available. Superior quality lenses are typically available through large labs and can not be made in just a couple of hours. Some commercial stores offer lenses in an hour or so, but you must understand that you are not receiving the best quality lenses available on the market. We use these larger labs to ensure the best quality lenses. You will not receive these lenses in one hour but we believe the wait is well worth it.
No-line progressive lenses: Distance, intermediate and reading prescriptions in one pair of glasses for all your vision needs. The technology behind these lenses has evolved to precision so virtually anyone can now comfortably wear their progressives all day with absolute natural ease.
No-line bifocals: No-line progressive bifiocals by Varilux allow you to see better because they provide clear, comfortable vision at all distances. There are no age-telling lines on the Varilux lenses so no one needs to know you are wearing bifocals. High-performance digital lenses by Varilux give you the best clarity and fit possible.A for sports and safety and work best with most rimless frame styles. Think about your lifestyle needs and ask if these are missing from your wardrobe.
Polarized lenses: Squint no more! In simplest terms a polarized lens is a high tech sunglass filter that eliminates glare and allows light to pass through the lens in only one direction (like miniblinds). It also provides 100% UV protection for your eyes. Without doubt, it’s the lens of choice for driving, fishing, and skiing, golfing and all sunny outdoor activities.
Polycarbonate: They are the strongest of all the optical lenses, these are recommended by the FDA for sports and safety and work best with most rimless frame styles. Think about your lifestyle needs and ask if these are missing from your wardrobe.
Computer lenses: These new technology lenses are designed for your eyes to relax at the computer. They are designed to give you comfort and vision for close and intermediate distances. While these lenses are primarily designed for computer use, they work great for anyone requiring clear intermediate and near vision, such as musicians, architects, accountants, surgeons, and many others. They are available in plastic, glass and polycarbonate, single vision as well as progressive lenses too.
Customized progressive lenses: These progressive lenses are the first lenses to be designed specifically and uniquely for each individual wearer. We will measure your head and eye measurements and Rx parameters and design completely customized progressive lenses just for you.
Hi-Index Lenses: These thin lenses come in wide range of choices, especially for strong prescriptions, but all are basically flatter front curves, resulting in thinner lighter lenses. They offer superior optics and can be easily used when rimless and thinner metal frames are being worn.
Transitions®: Transitions Changeable lenses make your eyes more comfortable because they are designed to adapt to any light. They darken in the sunlight and lighten back to clear indoors.
Anti-reflective coating (also know as anti-glare): Crizal anti-reflection lenses help you see and look your best. In simple terms ,the coating is actually layers of filters on the front and back surface of lenses that allow all of the light to pass through the lens instead of bouncing back as reflection. They are durable, easy to clean, and resist surface static. The most important feature is that the filter increases the amount of light that passes through the lens so you see better, clearer and sharper than before. Anti-reflective coatings make your lenses look almost invisible. from your wardrobe.
